A fan-made mod for the hit Half-Life: Alyx brings players back to Rapture in virtual reality - offering an eight-part story that feels Triple-A.
Check out the incredible trailer below!
One of my most immersive gaming experiences - obviously pre-VR, that is - was Bioshock. I remember seeing the trailer for the first time, already invested in the laissez-faire underwater utopia. Once I actually got into the game, I couldn't take myself away from it.
You'd find few people who'd be as keen to petition 2K for a potential Bioshock VR than me. But now, luckily, a modder has beaten them to the punch.
Wim Buytaert's Return to Rapture is an eight-part original story mod that revisits the awesome world of Bioshock in glorious VR. Best of all, this isn't a simple remake: it's an original story that merges the world of Bioshock and Half-Life.
In the mod, the Combine have discovered the whereabouts of Rapture, the libertarian utopia turned authoritarian dystopia. They're hunting for a secret suitcase which threatens the very fabric of reality. It's up to you to find it first:
"Rumours exist that the suitcase of Andrew Ryan has yet to be found. Within it are the secrets to ADAM and the plasmids. The quest for this artefact is not archaeology, it's a race against evil. If it is captured by the Combine the armies of darkness will march all over the face of the earth."
While the VR remake uses Half-Life: Alyx's engine to power it, it also includes up to 200 assets from the original Bioshock. In an interview with UploadVR, developer Wim Buytaert explained that he had requested permission from 2K to reuse assets.
These assets mean that a lot of fan-favourite features return in the mod, including...
• Vita Chambers to save your game: Hack the panel, and go inside! You’ll hear the sound and see the light!
• Audio diaries
• Little Sisters machines
• In-game, original vending machines
• Fully animated and modelled fauna!
However, the game also features an original soundtrack by RPM STUDIO warszawa, an exciting original story with professional voice actors and original atmosphere and visuals.
If you're wondering what exactly to expect in Wim Buytaert's Return to Rapture, UploadVR have gone so far as to upload a 15 minute highlight reel from the first four chapters of the game:
It looks awesome! Check it out now on SteamVR. But if we're ever going to see a Bioshock VR for real, it's best chance is on the Next-Generation PSVR. If I thought playing Bioshock on my Xbox 360 was immersive, I wonder what it'll be like on Sony's awesome Next-Gen PSVR controllers?
